Numerous studies have shown the benefits green space can have on mental health and well-being for both adults and children. Research found significant mood-boosting effects from even a short walk in a natural environment–a park, a community garden, any outdoor area with greenery.

Studies found after isolated exposures to green space, ADHD symptoms decrease. Greenery improves concentration, impulse control and hyperactivity. In addition, depression and anxiety are also reduced by engaging with nature. Amazingly, patients in hospitals that had windows looking out on greenery healed faster than those without these type of views.

There are various theories to explain the positive and powerful effects of green space on health and well-being. One hypothesis, known as biophilia, suggests that throughout human evolution, connection with nature has been essential to our survival. Because our ancestors needed to find food and water, we feel profoundly reassured when we connect with our natural environment. The urban environment is a relative newcomer to the human psyche. It can leave us feeling disoriented, stressed, and overstimulated.

Another theory attributes the health benefits of green space to a sort of cascade effect from stress-reduction. These studies show that even something as simple as the sound of running water serves as a buffer against the negative effects of stress. This is important because chronic stress has negative impacts on our mental and physical health.

Even having indoor plants in your home or work environment can reap similar rewards. So, don’t hesitate to get yourself houseplants. Not only do they clear the air of toxins, but caring for plants can be soothing. I recently learned studies showed plants respond to music? Classical appears to be their favorite. So while you are nurturing your plant, you can engage your senses as well. Taking a break from your work to look at your plant gives eyes a needed rest and can boost mood and subsequent concentration.

Avail yourself to the numerous benefits provided through simple encounters with nature!
